Thank you for visiting my work at DEORON during 3daysofdesign.
This page shows the evolving process of Shattered / Reflecting Bodies, presented chronologically from top to bottom.
At the end of the page, you’ll find a small selection of Shattered pieces available to collect.
Each piece is handmade in Amsterdam and produced in a very limited quantity especially for deoron and 3daysofdesign.

About Shattered
& Reflecting Bodies
Shattered (S, M, L) is a series of sculptural mirror objects that explore reflection as fragmentation. Developed as a physical study of light, angle and distortion. Shattered reinterpret reflection as an active and unstable condition. Rather than functioning as a passive surface, each piece transforms its surroundings through fragmentation, distortion and spatial tension.
Crafted from hand-shaped polished aluminium, the works capture natural and artificial light while continuously altering it. The smooth, reflective surface creates sharp yet shifting images of the environment, never fixed, always in motion. the polished aluminium is manipulated into geometric forms that disrupt and redirect reflection. Instead of offering a stable image, the objects continuously fracture and recombine their surroundings, creating shifting compositions in light and movement.
Depending on perspective and proximity, the objects oscillate between clarity and abstraction, object and atmosphere.
The series exists in three scales S, M and L — each exploring a different spatial intensity. From intimate interaction to architectural presence, the works operate as both object and environment: collapsing the boundary between viewing and being viewed. The series explores how reflection behaves across different spatial intensities, from intimate encounters to architectural presence. Each scale introduces a different relationship between body, object and space, turning the mirror into a tool for spatial composition rather than representation.
Shattered marks the starting point of Reflecting Bodies, an ongoing body of work in which reflection is treated as material: something that can be shaped, broken, stretched and spatialised.
Reflecting Bodies is an ongoing spatial research series investigating the materialisation of light, reflection and perception within constructed environments. Across multiple large-scale installations, the work treats reflection not as an effect, but as a physical and spatial force — something that can be shaped, fractured and composed.
The series unfolds as an evolving system rather than a fixed object, continuously adapting to context, scale and technology. Each iteration expands the dialogue between material, light, sound and space, often in collaboration with sound designer and producer ENEQUIST, whose spatial compositions intensify the relationship between auditory and visual perception.
Reflecting Bodies invites to witness
an interplay of light, material and
reflection. Reflecting Bodies is a
work that in a way searches for the
captivation and materialisation of
light and reflection within a space.
‘Reflecting Bodies’ is a study of
material, shape, volume, light and
the interplay between these four
elements.
About
Simone Smelt
Simone Smelt is a designer of sculptural objects and future-forward furniture, based in Amsterdam and a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven. Her objects exist somewhere between furniture and sculpture — tactile interventions that anchor shape through quiet tension and bold simplicity.
With a sharp eye for visual balance (or unbalance) and a deep understanding of material, form and color, Simone creates objects that appear both minimal and unapologetically expressive. Her work embraces mono-materiality, and circular design principles — not as limitations, but as poetic frameworks.
In addition to her independent practice, Simone works as creative director and designer for several leading Dutch design brands, including Studio HENK, FÉST Amsterdam, where she designs high-end design furniture collections from concept to mass production.
Simone’s work has been featured in national and international publications, including Sight Unseen, FRAME Magazine, Dezeen, Vogue, Elle Decoration, The Volkskrant, Architectenweb, Het Parool, and Stijlvol Wonen. She furthermore exhibited at o.a. the Dutch Design Week, and exhibitions across Europe.
